Piece of mind with a wedding dress policy

This section of the wedding insurance policy is intended to pick up claims for two things:

• Attire which is owned by the wedding party which is damaged before the ceremony and thus affecting or preventing the wedding photos immediately after the ceremony from being taken.
• Attire which is hired and is either deemed to be in need of repair, cleaning or replacement for damage which takes place at the ceremony or the reception.

As a general rule, for the most part; the attire for the wedding party will be covered under their home insurance (assuming they have contents cover) whilst they have custody of it; or by the supplier whilst it is being washed, stored or altered.

It is therefore not a section of cover where we see a high number of valid claims.

What’s covered under a wedding dress policy?

When it comes the valid claims, the majority of these are for hired suits belonging to the male attendants and the groom himself - suits which have to go back to the hire company and may have an impromptu tear from busting out moves on the dance floor, or a red wine stain should a bottle or glass be knocked over.

Ultimately, unless the item is hired; once it has served its purpose i.e. the wedding is over and the photos are unaffected cover ceases; as with all of our policies, this is an indemnity style policy which doesn’t offer any form of benefit or betterment as a result of an incident.

What’s not covered under wedding dress insurance?

Unfortunately we do see some brides looking to use the policy as a means of, essentially, getting a free dress once the wedding is over, the photo’s perfect and then suddenly a small tear of stain is noticed and rather than wanting to have it replaced, cleaned or repaired; want the insurance to cover the cost of the dress. This is not the intention of the policy or the purpose of insurance.

Fortunately, these claims are few and far between; with many clients having genuine claims being settled and having the memories from the day preserved.
