Ringwood Carnival

Located on the edge of the New Forest, Ringwood hosts its annual carnival that takes place in September every year. A celebration of local businesses, arts, and entertainment, Ringwood Carnival is fun for all the family.

But what is it all about?

The Ringwood Carnival Society is a registered charity and was established to help organise and coordinate an annual Carnival for the town of Ringwood. The carnival is a ‘festival of fun’, aiming to raise and donate to many local charities, organisations and good causes. These funds are awarded after each Carnival.

When did it start?

Ringwood hosted its first carnival in 1928 and was originally set up to fund the purchase of a local field from a local man called Mr. Carver, as well as to raise monies for the Royal Victoria West Hants Hospital. After initial support and encouragement, more carnivals followed in 1931 and 1934 when the Coldstream Guards marched through the town in full dress uniform.

After a short Hiatus, the carnival returned in 1950 after World War II. Since this day the carnival has become an annual event taking place every September.

What can I expect?

The Carnival consists of two main processions, an afternoon Children’s  procession and a spectacular evening illuminated parade. Each parade features fantastic community floats created by local groups such as clubs, schools, organisations, businesses as well as groups of families and friends.

The processions also include wonderful marching bands, steam traction engines (particularly famous in the Hants and Dorset areas), dance troupes and weird and wonderful feature vehicles. Both processions are headed by the Carnival Queen that changes annually, led by the heavy horses.

There a variety of activities and family-orientated events that make Ringwood Carnival a brilliant day out. Street entertainers, music bands, live entertainment, arts and crafts stalls on the village green, fireworks, and a fun fare all also take place on the day.

The Ringwood Carnival Committee are committed to the smooth-running of the carnival and work exceptionally hard all year round to make the event a success.

If you want to join in the fun, Ringwood Carnival 2019 will be taking place at 12 pm on Saturday 21st September 2019.
